American Panorama

This is a very old painting from my college days, one of the few that I still have. I con’t remember if it was ever titled, but American Panorama seems to fit. I aws fascinated with America as a child and still am today – I used to make sprawling bungalows with large carports out of lego and loved cowboy and indian films, which I still love today. I spent much of my college years looking at the work of photographers such as Walker Evans and Robert Frank and the images in Time/Life and the phonebooks of Ed Ruscha – particularly his Sunset Boulevard edition.  I think my Grandmothers’s National Geographics were a strong influence. This painting combines collage with overpainting, and is one of many American-themed pieces I produced.
